Updated city regulations turn down construction noise →
At a time when democratic norms are eroding at the federal level, I’ve taken comfort in the strength of our local democracy here in Vermont — especially in our city’s commitment to civil, respectful and thoughtful civic discourse. That’s why I was disheartened to read recent claims that the City Council has “stripped (noise) protection from the public” and attempted to “cover it up.” (read more →)

Unlike the feds, South Burlington isn’t ignoring climate crisis →
In May, atmospheric carbon dioxide levels topped 430 parts per million — the highest in 14 million years. If that number feels abstract, the consequences are not. Last year was Earth’s hottest in the modern record… (read more →)

Vermont not too small to tackle climate change→
Last year was not great for living things. Out of our direct sight, species experienced mass die-offs around the globe — millions of dead seabirds, billions of star fish and snow crabs and hundreds of gray whales, all due to ocean waters that are too warm relative to what these species have adapted to. Coral reefs are bleaching and dying… (read more →)

At its Jan. 13 meeting, the South Burlington City Council unanimously advanced the proposed FY26 budget to voters. This year’s municipal budget limits the municipal property tax rate increase to the anticipated change in the consumer price index… (read more →)

The Climate Crisis is Real →
I would implore VTDigger to refuse to publish commentaries with dangerous misinformation like the one written by Meg Hansen (“Bad policy begets worse; repeal Global Warming Solutions Act”). Meg says “Serious critics … believe that Earth’s complex dynamical system of temperature is influenced by multiple factors rather than controlled by CO2 alone.” It is true that, over short time spans, multiple factors influence temperature and climate… (read more →)

MY PRESENTATIONS TO THE CITY COUNCIL PRIOR TO THE 2023 ELECTION

Highlights of the presentation that I made on August 1, 2022 to the South Burlington City Council on behalf of the South Burlington Climate Action Task Force, requesting that the City adopt an ordinance requiring that new construction primarily utilize renewable energy sources for heating and hot water.  The presentation materials are here.  Link to a story in the Other Paper on the August presentation is here. The City approved the new ordinance in early November. Story here.

Highlights of the presentation that I made with Ethan Goldman on November 11, 2022 to the South Burlington City Council on behalf of the South Burlington Climate Action Task Force, requesting that the City consider placing on a town ballot a proposal to amend the City Charter to allow the City to regulate thermal energy systems in existing buildings.  The presentation materials are here.
